Has anyone used sparklers instead of rice, birdseed, or confetti streamers when bride and groom leave reception? We are wondering if there are any instances of injury to people or clothing.

I was going to use sparklers for my wedding, but my reception location told me that they are a fire hazard. So, you might want to check with your location to see what their regulations are on them. Instead of sparklers I am going to use bubbles. They are not as fun, but they are better than rice.

I wanted to use sparklers for my wedding, but my fiance thought it was corny (men...). I think it's a great alternative, but if your reception site doesn't allow it, then you might look into freeze-dried rose petals. There's nothing like getting sent away in a shower of rose petals Very Happy

I also wanted to use sparkelers- but yes, my fiance also thought it was corny, and my reception venue will not allow them. Definitely check with your reception hall before you buy them!

I like the spaklers idea also, but you're right, I'd be careful about fire risks.

Plus, if there's kids there, you don't want to have to worry about someone getting poked in the eye or something. Might be better to go with something less flammable. Smile

I have never heard of sparklers before. I like the idea, its new and fun.
If kids and alcohol are limited and its allowed on the premises... go for it.

Bubbles works quite well especially in pictures as it doesn't 'drop' as fast as rice and other heavier item. Another plus side is that kids love to play with them however, you also risk getting their attention

I went to a wedding a couple of weeks ago and they used sparklers. The cool thing was that they bought these extra long ones from a firework place. This way they were held far away from everyone's body reducing the risks. Plus, they lasted forever since they were so long. all the guests made a long arch way and the bride and groom went walking through. The pictures turned out great! I have seen others and it is a very interesting way to leave your wedding. (However, kids must be supervised).

i wanted to use sparklers at my wedding but i have gotten advice from several friends that when alcohol is involved at the reception they are a bad idea! apparently it is pretty easy to burn the brides dress with the sparks and people who have been drinking are much less watchful of where they hold them!!

What type of matches would you use if you wanted to light the sparklers? Should you use the handheld automatic light (so the flame is far from you) or would a regular match from a matchbook work?

I think that it would be a really neat idea, but my biggest concern would be children and also the fact that you are going to be wearing your wedding dress. I would hate for something to happen to your dress becasue of sparklers. It might depend on what type of dress you are wearing, but I would definately think about that as well.

My friend used sparklers at her wedding in April. The photos turned out great but it was a lot of hassell to have one person passing them out to all of the guests and then to have one person lighting the matches to light them for everyone. Maybe if you thought about it a little more and used to long lighters instead of matches it may go a little faster. It is a nice idea though. I agree if there is alcohol involved you may have a bigger risk of someone getting burned or your wedding gown getting burnt as well. Kids at my friends wedding with the sparklers was not a big issue because their parents supervised them. Wink

At a local wedding here, a couple used sparklers. At the end of the reception, the guests just lined up, sort of and at the door were decorated buckets filled with birdseed to keep the sparklers form getting into a mess. The ushers stood at the door with the buckets and just handed them to the guests as they walked out... worked out very niceley.

I am going to use sparklers (10 inch) at my outdoor reception in April 2006. I already called the fire department for the ok. The regulation in our county is they have to be 10 inches or less.

I plan to give each person 4 sparklers and a box of wood matches tied with ribbon.

If you want that pretty glow at night without the hazard of sparklers, why not use glow sticks? They are safe for everyone, and you still kinda get the effect of light at night.
