Hi all...I am having to have my wedding reception in a High School commons area due to the size. Since obviously it is decorated in the school colors and my colors aren't the same I was trying to find some ways to mask the room. My initial thought was to buy Tulle in bulk and use is starting in the middle of the room on the ceiling and make a drop ceiling of sorts with the Tulle also cascading down the walls. I was going to place Christmas lights behind the tulle to add a softer lighting option than useing the school lights. I was wondering if anyone had tried this and if so if using the normal lights with the green cord was too obvious through the tulle. Please help as the wedding is only 4 months away and I must do SOMETHING!!

Namaste,
Kristen

Kristen, good luck with coverong up that common room. Sounds like you have a good idea already, just don't know how simple it would be to do it. I would definately use the x-mas lights. Makes it much softer and elegant. You should call around to see if you can rent a tent or canopy to fit the room. They have them in white fabric that will hold your lights better. And since you,ve already had the drop ceiling idea, the tents would not be too large, just easier to put up and take down. They use tents in outdoor weddings all the time...no different for an indoor wedding. If you go with the tulle, I would use a colored tulle to match your wedding colors. Have a great time!!

When I taught at a high school with a commons area several years ago, we had to use the commons area for the prom. Have you asked any of the faculty there or at other schools for ideas? There may be pictures in school yearbooks also. I remember that we used lots of twinkle lights and plants (ficus trees, palms, etc. - could be silk or real) and the columns that you can rent or purchase. You can also make holders for tulle or curtain-type backdrops out of PVC pipe. There are instructions on one of the large wedding websites on how to make a backdrop - just try searching on some of the big sites. Good Luck!

Hi. I am having my reception in a old school gym. I had the same idea of using tulle to hide the looks of the gym. I thought of making it look like a tent and having the tulle hang down the sides to hide the bleachers and to make it look like our guests aren't in a school gym. If you do decide to do this and you find tulle in bulk quantities please let me know.

Tingley15,
I also am thinking of Tulle for decorating and this site so far has a good deal at one dollar/yard. Jo-Ann fabrics has it on sale for less but you have to watch the ads. If anyone finds it for less, post it!

I might be a little late on this one, and I apologize if I am, but you should check out Cudge.net. I saw this suggestion elsewhere for candle holders, but when I was on the website, I noticed that they do sell tulle in bulk.

Again, a bit late ... but Walmart has white tulle for 77 cents a yard. Other colors are 98 cents a yard....

Not sure if this post is to late for some of your or not. No dates for the event were posted. I have used tulleing to cover areas before but I find some times you can still see what's behind it. I have found that the plastic table covering that come in rolls works wonders. You can purchase in alot of different colors and most party stores carry it. To soften this a bit you could accent with tulleing or gossamer (a heavier weight material used for decorating) Stumps carries this item. The table covering is easy to cut and I have even made chair coverings out of this. Also makes neat bows.
Great to use for outdoor accents. Idea
